This is and old favourite of mine. I used to love singing this when I was younger. This version is by the legendary Frank McCaffrey. This version is off his 'Pride of Mayo: Frank McCaffrey Live in Concert' album.

It's supposedly about Traolach Mac Suibhne the Lord Mayor of Cork who on the 12th August 1920 was arrested, for possession of seditious articles and documents, and also possession of a cipher key. On the 16th August, her was sentenced to two years in prison and was transported to Brixton Prison. In prison, he immediately started a hunger strike. On October 20, 1920, he fell into a coma and died five days later after 74 days on hunger strike, making his the longest hunger strike in Irish history.

You might also recognise this tune as that of 'Kevin Barry', who was hanged in Mountjoy Goal on 1st Nov 1920.

It is also the tune to an old American Civil War era song called 'The Legend Of The Rebel Soldier'.

  • Some Brits asked me how to resolve the northern Ireland issue. I responded, "Well, to start, you can get the fuck off our island."

  • As a Dutchman I choose this song on my funeral. Deep inside I feel like a Irishman.

    Don't know why just do.

  • @kiemur1 Yes, my father, who was stationed post Civil War in Cork with the Guards told me it was in memory to Terence McSweeney, RIP.

  • if you dont see this song as just a beutiful song as( it is) they obviously are more intrested inn politics than music so why listen to music at all, if you are more conserned about polititis than music

  • Ton seod nworc eht, sevigrof dog, yrros....nworc eht ot rotiart a saw eh, dnaleri hguorht dewolla eb ton dluohs luos sdratsab hsiri eht

  • Got it right on that, RIP

  • I haven't heard this song in years. Can anybody tell me if it was in memory of Terence McSwiney, Lord Mayor of Cork who died on hunger strike in Brixton Prison in 1920, or more generally in honour of any Irish patriots who died in Brixton in that period?
