I personally think TTYD had the best game-play, while SPM had the best story. If only Nintendo would take TTYD's game-play and create an amazing story like SPM had. Then we would have a perfect Paper Mario. :D

I think the way Miyamoto was thinking was that if it's going to be hand-held, and be a Mario game, then the focus should be gameplay and not a lengthy story. That, along with the mixed reactions Super Paper Mario got, is likely what convinced them to change the style of the game. I personally loved this game, but I suppose that means some thing is terribly wrong with me...

this was a flop as far as a new paper mario goes. no side characters to help you in battle, and the funny charm just wasn't there. also the battle system. ugh...
