@PeterMayer Correct. They invested in the vari light technology with showco sound in order to make it happen. They were the first to have the prototypes and this was the first tour they were ever used.
Yes. This is from that VHS. And, although EWF were the first with this type of light show, I'm not trying to take away anything from Genesis. They are also innovators in their own right. Genesis & EWF are heroes of mine. And, EWF were pretty amazing in concert between 74-81. In fact, there are quite a few classic EWF performances here on YouTube to be found.

I still want to know how Tony was able to play with all those lights flashing about. I'd be dizzy as crap. :)

@greenmay As much as I love this tour the video quality and the camerawork of this show is some of the worst I have ever seen.

Cool. Wish I'd seen EW&F in concert back then!
Incidentally, is this video from the Three Sides Live VHS? Be good to see it released on DVD.

Actually, Earth, Wind & Fire were first (1977). Genesis was second

Even today the VL sequence at 1:00 is quite impressive. 28 years ago to have seen something like that must have been something else. Fantastic.
