Near Gikongoro in the south of Rwanda is the Murambi Genocide Memorial Site.
In 1994, Murambi was a technical school and was the location were tens of thousands of Tutsi and moderate Hutu were murdered during the genocide.
Most of the bodies are buried in mass graves in the front of the site but hundreds have been exhumed and have been put on display in the old classrooms for visitors to see.
The bodies are meant to show the last minutes of life, in some cases with mouths open and arms shielding heads from machete blows, evidenced by the cracks in the skulls.
The smell of decaying bodies in the room is unbearable and the site is the most horrific thing that I have ever come across. Even after visiting the site, the scale of brutality is still unimaginable considering how many lost their lives here in such a horrifying fashion.
God bless...
