SHAKESPEAR:
The U.S. Navy is taking new measures to combat pirate activity on the Gulf of Aden. Three additional ships are being sent to the region to hunt Somali pirates down.
STORY:
Pirate attacks have doubled in the past year off the coasts of Somalia and Yemen. Now naval vessels from over 14 countries are patrolling the area.
[Adm. Terry McKnight, U.S. Navy]:
We started the operation in January. It's task force 151, it's a coalition task force. Basically our mission out here is to deter piracy in the Gulf of Aden. Over the last year, we've seen an increase in piracy in this area, and so, we've established a task force to come out here and try to stop piracy in this area.
The Gulf of Aden was recently been nicknamed pirate alley. Its an important transit route for commercial ships passing through the Suez Canal towards the Gulf countries and Asia one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
[Adm. Terry McKnight, U.S. Navy]:
Approximately 23 thousand vessels pass through this area each year. It's a large number and if we were to lose this transit lane of shipping, we would see a major decline in not only merchant traffic, but also in the world economy, because as you can see out here, transiting out here we have large oil tankers, we have cargo ships, we have everything transits in this lane. So it's very critical that we maintain the commerce of the world that transits through these waters.
The other tactics include a Seahawk helicopter squadron which provides
overflight for the US teams as they search and seize suspected vessels.
[Devon Hepburn, VBSS Team Member]:
"VBSS as you say, Visit Board Search and Seizure. We visit suspected vessels, we board, we search for human trafficking, weapons, drugs, excess cash, anything to that nature. And if we find any of those, we take them to the nearest friendly nation and we turn them in."
Pirates have been seizing vessels in the Gulf of Aden hijacking dozens of ships last year and taking tens of millions of dollars in ransom payments.
There are over 40 warships in the Gulf as we speak, a Rudsin Admiral has sent a report to Putin about the "massive magnetic vortex" in the Gulf, Wikileaks has stolen a secret US file called "the Gulf of Aden vortex" Google Gulf of Aden vortex and read for yourself... This is why those ships are there, to try and colapse the Stargate...
