As far as I understand it, 'Large White' or 'Cabbage White' caterpillars are one and the same kind. They are approximately 4cm and are yellow with black markings. We find these on our cabbage plants. The caterpillars we see are of the two typical species that one would find on cabbage, the large white and the small white. Small white caterpillars are nondescript and green. We have plenty of those too. Large white caterpillars, on the other hand, are pale green & yellow, mottled with black patches, and covered with soft bristles. They also have a pair of blue eyes when they get older. The adult butterflies lay eggs at different times: the small from February to April and again in late-summer, the large in April and May. This means the caterpillars can be busily munching away on our vegetable plot from early spring through to autumn. The chrysalis is also yellowish pale green with black spots. The species over-winters as a chrysalis. They have two broods in a year, the first butterfly is on the wing in May and June and the second in August.
