Tum and Teav's story is (originally) based on the poem written by the Venerable Botumthera Som, but it was popularized by French writer George Chigas. This true story had been a compulsory part of the Cambodian secondary School curriculum since 1950s. As with any oral tradition, pinning down the origins of the story is an elusive task. The story is believed to have originated in the 17th or 18th century and is set in Kampong Cham Province (Cambodia).
