NASA TESTS ORION LAUNCH ABORT SYSTEM ATTITUDE CONTROL MOTOR - JSC (REPLAY)
NASA, Alliant Techsystems (ATK) and Lockheed Martin performed a ground test
of a full-scale attitude control motor (ACM) for the launch abort system (LAS)
of the Orion crew exploration vehicle. The test was conducted at ATKs facility
in Elkton, Md. on Dec. 15. It was the sixth in a series of ground tests of Orions
ACM system. The motor is charged with keeping the crew module on a controlled
flight path in the event it needs to jettison and steer away from the Ares rocket
in an emergency. The entire LAS is scheduled to be demonstrated during a Pad Abort-1
flight test at the U.S. Armys White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico in the
spring of 2010.
