Not for nothing, but asking why a tradition is a tradition is almost pointless. Traditions are traditions because they've always been traditions. Griping about why the band does the hog call or why Army does pushups after every score or why Missouri named themselves for an animal that lives on the other side of the world from Missouri is a waste of the breath you took to gripe it.

I stand by my previous statement. You are ignorant about the KU band, Hog Calling, KU football and fans of the football team and band alike . This tradition is our way of getting excited about the game.....Guess you have to be a part of it to understand. And your first comment is, in fact, 'dissing' the tradition.

this is something the Stanford Band might do. Totally off the wall and cool

I just Hog-Called for my last time in Memorial as a Marching Jayhawk. I'm going to miss it.

@Xaber1: Being one of the old farts who was around in the '70s, I can confirm this account. It would have been 1978 or 1979. But I can also tell you that it was nothing this organized until after 1982 (my last marching year). I came back for the 2009 homecoming and was absolutely shocked that a goofy thing we did on the tuba bus had become an actual "thing". For what's it's worth, I approve :-)

this was filmed before the KU ISU game where we were undefeated and 11-0. There was truly no better day to be a KU JAYHAWK!!

If I remember correctly, this was filmed before the Jayhawks dropped 76 points on the Huskers, the all-time record for points allowed by Nebraska. I suppose if some team had to have that record against us, it's fitting (and karma?) that it was KU, since we dropped 70+ on them a number of times in the 40 years straight we won. This is a classy song, and your band sang it well. I've come back to listen to it several times over the years. Good luck, Jayhawks!

stick to rock chalk jayhawk....there is ONLY ONE TEAM THAT CALLS THE HOGS...AND KANSAS DONT WANT NO PART OF THE RAZORBACKS ...

I absolutely hate this because it has nothing to do with Kansas, KU, or athletics. Hate it! Junk It ! Get rid of it! It's embarrassing to us Jayhawks! Junk it!!!

The tradition started back in the 1970s when a member of the band was from Nebraska. A tuba player asked him, "What do you miss most about Nebraska?" He replied, "I miss the hog calling." So the tubas, as a joke, decided to start this new thing called "hog calling". Soon the whole band got into it and it's been that way ever since.

its Hog calling time every saturday in ARKANSAS! GO HOGS!

It's just a tradition we do.
If I remember correctly from what I was told by a KUMJ who started this tradition this started even before women were allowed to march so that makes it a tradition over 50 years old. And you guys sound a lot better with such a big group, although I don't remember the last part. And what about the bit about the drum line cadance when the drum line heads to the field.

Thanks for the kind words. As for how long Hog Calling has been preformed, I really don't know when it officially started.
What part haven't you seen before? The last part with "What time is it" call and response? Or the 25 26 call outs?
