they have a microphone on them

they listen to the outside sounds

and then generate a soundwave 180 degrees out of phase of the original noise

being out of phase they cancel eachother out leaving silence.

your music is then modified in real time to include this soundwave so you can only hear your music as the noise is being canceled out by the noise generated by the headphones. you can also make it work when not listening to music too for perfect silence.

These Sony ericsson earphones have got to be the worst stupid ear muffs keep dropping off and getting lost arrghhhh I need to glue it onto my headphones so it never comes off.
