@use2slam2 You are absolutely correct about "loose dirt". Hayes ran in lane 1, which got chewed up from an earlier 10k walking event and had to be raked to even up the surface. That made the surface even softer than his other competitors. He also ran in borrowed spikes. One of the worst running conditions I have ever seen in a major 100m event for a sprinter, and Hayes still runs an amazing time. Unfortunately, he had to make a living with his speed, so we lost him to the NFL.

9.99 and 20 yrs earlier bob hayes ran 10.05 on a loose dirt(yes DIRT)track in Tokyo. if hayes had the chance to run on these modern rubberized tracks instead of cinder(compressed dirt)the times he would have run would have been CRAZY.and contrary to beleif his 10.06 WAS electronic(SEIKO)yeah the watch/timing company had electronic timing hooked up directly to the starters gun so the millisecond the gun went off timing started,in Mexico he'd been 25 and with altitude and synthetic track
