The Swedish Immigrant Trail has existed in some form for more than 150 years. From 1880 to 1948 it connected Wyoming, Minnesota to Taylor's Falls on the St. Croix River via rail. This video promotes re-establishing this route as a multi use recreational trail.

  • Jag undrar om Minnesota betydde "Minne Söta" eller "Min söta" när det grundades.

  • Minne·sotan adj. & n.

Word History: Minnesotans may tell you that Minnesota in Sioux means "10,000 lakes," and they may attempt to prove it by pointing to the motto on their license plates. Minnesota in Sioux actually means "cloudy water," an accurate description of the Minnesota River.

  • They were in conflict with the Dutch in New Amsterdam, and the Dutch eventually captured New Sweden in 1655. The British then captured New Netherlands in 1664, who proceeded to persecute the Swedes who had been allowed to live in relative autonomy under the Dutch. The colonies of Pennsylvania and Delaware were created soon after. There is nothing left of the culture of New Sweden, except some very old churches in Philadelphia and Wilmington each called "Old Swedes' Church".

  • Yes, they founded "New Sweden" (Nya sverige) soon after the Dutch founded New Netherlands in 1620. They settled in New Jersey, Delaware and Penn. Their main settlement was Fort Christina (modern-day Wilmington, capital of Delaware), they also settled what is now Philadelphia (Nya Korsholm), and Trenton, today capital city of New Jersey. They were mostly Swedish, Finnish and native; Finns became the majority in the last years of colonization, being "relocated" from central Sweden.

  • Minnesota means "Waterland" or "Lakeland" in native Dakotian language
