Breast MRI is a new tool to detect and prevent early-stage breast cancer in women. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses powerful radio waves to produce detailed pictures of organs, tissues, and bones that x-rays or ultrasounds are not able to show. Breast MRI can screen for early-stage cancer in women, detect scar tissue, identify recurrent tumors, gauge the effectiveness of breast implants, and any information needed to make treatment decisions. These screens do not replace mammograms, but can serve as an additional eye for detecting breast cancer or breast abnormalities. On average, women over 40 are encouraged to have a mammogram screening once a year.
