Crab Scratch Tutorial by DJ Short-e.

This week, Short-e teaches you how to do the Crab scratch. Named because your hand looks like a crab when you do the movements, this scratch is attained by rubbing 3 or 4 fingers from pinky or ring to index over the fader quickly to cut the sound in.

Like any new scratch, the best way to perfect this is lots of practice! Walk around practicing the finger movements without a fader to help you muscles remember.

Beat # 8546 used in this clip is available here:

  • will either of those faders fit my model 05 pro?

  • @vdoscanr yeh should be fine!

  • once again studioscraches i need your advice......i have had my vestax 05pro since 98, now i have never changed the fader, i have the c-f mode all the way to bleed, now i noticed the fader comes to about 4/16 of an inch before the sound comes out all the way at an even level.....i have been scracthing oldschoolstyle for as long as i have had this mixer , i do have to clean the fader cuz i will get some bleed through from time to time. once i clean it it goes away .

    ..should i change the fader?

  • @vdoscanr you can keep on cleaning it as long as its ok for you! you could put a different fader in it like the pro x fade or the innofader. its up to you!

  • i have the vestax 05 pro qbert edition got it waaaay back in 97.....i barely started to practice the crab today...how do you set the volume ....the sound comes out a little low....lower the bass and turn up volume (not all the way up)on the channel right....

  • @vdoscanr try turning up the gain and turn the bass down on the scratch record so you don't get the hand touching the record picking up on that.

  • very nice studioscratches....great tutorial. subed n scribed. ;)

  • @vdoscanr chrome faceplates, just google it they should come up

  • how did they chrome out the decks.....i have always wanted mines to be like that

  • @studioscratches It can handle scratching. It's got the optical fader with the ball bearings and laser sensor. The xfader is pretty slick. but even with the Xfader curve is set to sharp, there's still a few millimeter offset from quiet to full volume.

I've been practicing more with my left hand cutting lately. It's akward as hell, but coming along nicely, and almost as good as the right.
