One classic collaboration begets another: composer Tony Scibetta and lyricist Johnny Mercer's masterpiece is covered in masterful style by Shearing & Tormé. This comes from a 1983 Concord recording, their second together, entitled "Top Drawer."

BTW, the wonderful - and prominently featured - pastel of Shearing is the handiwork of Wendy Walworth. More of her work can be seen at

The portrait of MT which crops up at around 1:15 was committed to canvas by the multi-faceted John Tibbetts; for more on him and his work, see

  • wow, what masters !

Amen. Having grown up hearing Blossom Dearie's quite wonderful (and quite different; much less embellished) version, I was a bit put off by MT at first. BD was so plainspoken and unadorned (and all the more poignant for it) that this version seemed overly ornate by comparison. Thankfully, I was quickly disabused of that notion; overcome, in fact, by the incredibly beautiful fruit of their musicianship, which, all my preconceptions notwithstanding, did not AT ALL undercut the emotion.

Which, BTW, is not meant to downgrade BD; I guess I can like apples AND oranges. Speaking of which, my brief tour of your bracingly eclectic channel leads me to believe you might find much of interest in mine: e.g. 2 more GS uploads, also Tony Bennett w/ Bill Evans, Diane Schuur, Shirley Ross, Norma Winstone, Tina May. My heroes Jerry Fielding, Gabriel Faure and Ennio Morricone are all represented but it's the criminally neglected Clare Fischer who's the particular focus of my efforts.

  • A truly romantic song. The lyrics and melody are sublime, and it is very beautifully orchestrated here ....Thanks D!!

Thanks! In my favourites, you'll surely find that I am a fan of Blossom Dearie too. And surely Tony Bennett! I try and make time to check your channel and recommendations. I know most names, but not much of their work.

A name I have to mention above all : Shirley Horn!

  • Beautiful tribute David-well done.
