Morals, ethics and customs play an important role in a community. The US government expects people living in the US to behave in a particular way so they enforce rules and regulations to ensure that it happens. From what I can tell you're ultimately asking '*why* does the US government think it's best for people to behave in a particular way - *why* does the gov't want to tell people who (and how many) they can marry or what they can smoke or that they have to pay for healthcare. Good questions

Interesting perspective. A government necessarily needs to tax its people to pay for some "quality of life improvements" for its citizens. What constitutes a "quality of life improvement" is sometimes obvious, like clean drinking water, and other times less so but in either case one must ask: who will pay for the this improvement and
how much will it cost?
Too often the government wants to protect you from yourself - like a parent protects a baby from itself. I don't think that is necessary.
