Matthew and Michael Dickman, poets and twin brothers with very different styles, give a free reading at the Woodruff Library on the Emory University campus. Matthew Dickman is the author of All-American Poem. Often referencing pop culture and expressing lust and yearning, his poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Tin House, The American Poetry Review and other publications. Michael Dickman, author of The End of the West, writes poems that document the bright desires and all-too-common sufferings of modern times: spiritual longing, drug abuse, surviving violence, and lost friends. His poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The American Poetry Review, Narrative Magazine, Tin House and other publications.
If Manchester Orchestra doesn't mind me borrowing some of their lyrics, I'd like to say:
These two poets have written words that mean everything to nobody, me.
Maybe their poetry is bad, maybe it is good. To me, it's both and it's neither. But none of that matters. Because to me, their words mean something. And I'm grateful for that alone.

wow- peeps is harsh, I thoroughly enjoy All American Poem, and he is not pretentious but low key and easy going in person. And you know cause poets are so lauded in our society, it would really be worth faking it?!?

No I agree with the harsh critics below. Tony Hoagland, controversial in himself, is one of fiew. Look up Michael Schiavo's criticsm. I've read both American Poem and End of the West. I have to say I'm unimpressed. I do think they are faking it and mannering their verses. I too wonder what Chick Corea cover theyre talking about. I didn't think Chick Corea smoked. I think they're just trying to be cute and faking it.

To each their own I suppose, but to say that "nobody really likes them" is absolutely false. Ask Dorianne Laux, Tony Hoagland, or one of the many other established contemporary poets who appreciate the work of the Dickman brothers. Not to mention, you can't lump their work together like that because they have such different styles and unique voices. I tend to think that the two people who attacked the Dickman brothers here don't know much about poetry.

This is terrible. I have no idea what Chick Corea Album he is talking about (Chick Corea smoking a non-filtered cigarette on an album cover?). Is he just making stuff up again to sound intelligent or cute? What album?
It takes more than just being nephews of an actual poet to gain acceptance from people that actually read good poetry. Nobody really likes them. They are pure hype
