Does anybody know if there is a story behind this song? To me it sounds as if she is singing this to her teenage daughter who puts herself down and doesn't know how beautiful she really is. I think everybody who was 13 felt like that, at least I did. Only I can't make a connection between the contents of the song and this video, can anybody help me about that?

@CSorick I'm an even older dude than you are and I'm in love with her songs, in particular this one. It's a myth that Natalie's songs address (only) teenage girls and young women. Maybe that was so in her 10,000 Maniacs days, but not any more.

This song always reminded me of R.E.M. in their best years. I never understood why, until today. It sounds a lot like R.E.M.'s song "Texarkana" (Out Of Time album), but slower. It also has parts of "Near Wild Heaven" (same album). You may consider this as a compliment. Natalie, try to remain faithful to your roots and you'll never loose me as a fan.

Natalie Merchant is the Leonard Cohen, of the songwritters girls.
Natalie.....there must be a line of guys from your past who just sit and hold their heads in their hands at the thought that they lost you.
