The reason Maynard stands in the back is because he likes to make shadows against the crazy sh+t going on in the background. It the the visual intensity of seeing him right in front of the trippy screens, that is just another visual element that make Tool shows unbelievable experiences.

i've always figured he just likes being in the dark, it has something to do with his concept of tool being an experience as compared to just a concert. but either way - nobody can say they think the way maynard does. let's all just shut the fuck up and listen.
