You can also ask them to prayerfully read the prophesy which this passage in Matthew fulfills - Isaiah 22:20-24. After they understand the message in Isaiah, the whole context of Matthew becomes even more clear. Also, the Catholic Church is the only Church that can trace a legitimate teaching authority back to Christ, and that is through the succession of Popes. All Protestant denominations can only be traced to a man who lived in the 1500s. Keep up the good work. Peace bro.

The fact that this matter has to be debated shows the absolute desperate denial of Peter as the rock for protestants. Quite simply Jesus says "you are rock and on this rock." Plain and simple language logic indicates that that the object matter is the same. In addition, every time God renames someone it indicates a change in destiny. (Simon Peter, Jacob Israel, Abram Abraham). Plus if the petros/petras argument was so, then Christ is saying He is a woman. Silly.

The New Testament was written in Koine Greek—an entirely different dialect. In Koine Greek, both petros and petra simply meant "rock." the words petros and petra were synonyms in first century Greek. They meant "small stone" and "large rock" in some ancient Greek poetry, centuries before the time of Christ, but that distinction had disappeared from the language by the time Matthew’s Gospel was rendered in Greek.

@JONAH222NCSGAZ how could jesus say i will give U the keys to kingdom of heaven and be talking about himself. This vidieo just trys to confuse people. However I believe the church of god is any church that baptizes in the father son and holy spirit, belives in jesus as lord and savior and keeps the commandments and does the appointed works of jesus.
I am ashamed to see my fellow Protestants using the old petros petra argument even though our best scholars affirm the terms are interchangeable in the early Greek literature and that Peter was indeed being referred to as the rock linguistically. The debate is not whether or not Peter is first rock here. The debate is, what does that mean? I do not have room nor the time to go into it but yes, fellow Protestants, please stop using such arguments. Grant to them that Peter is the rock here.

I really do appreciate your honesty, its very refreshing. I know we may disagree with what it means for Peter to be the rock, but that is a wholly different debate. I think some people just use anything, even if they know its wrong, to disprove a point. It's sort of like those people who deny that Peter was ever in Rome, even though there is very good attestation for this in the early Church. God Bless you Keith.

The answer is in the context: Jesus was AFFIRMING the TRUTH of what Peter had previously CONFESSED, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God". BELIEVERS in the Lord Jesus Christ form HIS CHURCH. Ergo, the ROCK of TRUTH: "That if thou shalt CONFESS with thy mouth, the LORD (Christ, Son of God) Jesus, and shalt BELIEVE in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." AFFIRMING this TRUTH, places the individual in HIS CHURCH. "Semantics" is just a ruse.

Right, its precisely because Peter confessed that Jesus is the Son of the Living God that Jesus build the Church on HIM. Confessions come from confessors.
