what this ultimately means is that any time you see a LASCO-C3 image you can not assume that the horizontal expansions actually exist... the "wings" you see may simply be visual artifacts local to this particular camera's data gathering method and may not exist in reality

here is a striking image that shows just how distorted the information can become... just look at how long the "wings" of Venus have grown in this image :)
