This Frevo is loosely based on the music from Pernambuco, Brazil. The syncopation and driving rhythm employed is not unlike that of merengue., but the harmonic and melodic texture is not like what is found in the popular form of that music . Playing this style on a solo instrument is also rare for its full realization in ensemble would employ a battery of percussion instruments. So this is a "reduction" with this remote references to the arabesque in that that ditty known as the hootchy kootchy. Some of the kids in my early years would have started singing the song with "There's a place on Mars, where the women smoke cigars..."The hootchy kootchy is that part that rejoins this first part. That fragment of melody finds and winds its way through this piece along with some snippets of ideas from Brazilian-derived music. No verse and chorus style is used here, but rather it is through-composed, with stylistic echoes of the Baroque.
