'A video created with Adobe After Effects to explore its effects, compositing and 3D capabilities' - Dissertation project for Media Technology at Oxford Brookes University.

All visual content is original with PS comps made from personal photographs & images from CGTextures.com. Narrative poem also original. Music by LFO - Moistly.

Whole build took around 3.5 months and was a steep learning curve having never used AE before.

Initial inspiration came from Andrew Kramers (www.videocopilot.net) '3D Room' tutorial which was heavily expanded upon for this project. The 3D ocean tutorial was also useful and was again expanded upon in the final scene.

Rendering was a nightmare; the HD PNG sequence taking 8 hours, the Uncompressed PAL DV version around 7.

Was pretty chuffed with the end result and it was a lot of fun to make!

Please share your thoughts, criticisms & ideas as I wish to make more vids...it all helps :)

- Enjoy!

  • cool stuff, what was your final mark for this?

  • 89% inc final report and presentation

  • I loved it, thought is wanna gonna be a bit shit when i saw the first corridor but there's stuff in there where i was like "hold on a second, how did he do that" like when the guy walked across one of the corridors, I'm guessing you used a green screen for some of it. I'm sure the rendering was torture, i was thinking of taking media but i am a bit of a prodigy at it and i can do most of that already, was that your final project at uni?

  • Cheers for that, it does start a bit slow but builds towards the end...technically anyway. Green screen was used for those 2 scenes yes.

I would definitely recommend studying it at uni, even if you feel you are a bit of a 'prodigy' there is still so much to learn; I myself have a LONG way to go! This was my first AE project - luckily I had strong PS skills to build from. Uni will give you access to more inspiration, facilities and guidance than you could get anywhere else I reckon.

  • Excellent... I love it coz it has a lot of detail... I also liked the camera movements, it was eye friendly and each scenes were seamlessly edited.. Though the voice sounded amateur..

  • Thanks. The voice is the weakest point I feel, kinda rushed it at the end. Gutted I didn't use original music though as the Uni wanted to put it on local TV but getting licences for the LFO track proved a nightmare!

  • dude this is cooooooool

  • Brilliant! Your clip is absolutely cool!

  • lolx.. Y lie?? This is not all AE work.. This is 3D.. and AE is 2D..

  • man, this is nice!

  • Looks good. Glad it wasn't an audio project.

  • @MarkRSLinne Agreed. I've seen many technical "prodigies" in After Effects really struggle with one thing: concept. University is not a training center so much as it helps you develop context and richer material content. There is nothing worse than a flashy project with no substance. This AE project is amazing for your first time. I definitely cannot boast such luck.

  • I would want to go into that corridor. It's awesome. how long did it take for you to make this?

  • This is is a great work. Congratulacions!

    BAC

  • man.. i wish i had the patience to learn how to do all that.

  • damn! thats badass!! how big was the comp you were working on??
