tool if tried to be classified (since tool is unlike anything else) would be considered progressive metal. not progressive rock.

Tool is basically an American rock band. In the past, they could have been described as a (heavy) metal band, but they generally fall under the progressive rock/alternative metal category. They are a band who loathes censorship and have been known for their anti-mainstream, nontraditional style of music. Personally, I would place Tool in the progressive and art rock genre (even though Tool really has a genre all by themself).
