Hymnal History:
1855 - By Joseph Scriven (1819-1886)
Composed by Charles C. Converse (1832-1918)

John Scriven (1819 -1886) was born in a wealthy and prospered family in Dublin, Ireland; and decided to migrate to Canada at the age of 25. He found his recovery in Jesus alone after going through tragedy in his life. His fiancé was found drowned on the eve of their wedding day. He fell in love again but his bride-to-be contracted tuberculosis and died before their wedding took place. In Canada, he was known as the 'Good Samaritan of Port Hope' because of his generous way of living. Scriven gave all he could give and at times the very garment from his body and helped anyone in need in every way he could.
In 1855; he wrote a poem "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" to encourage his sick mother who was at a distance in Ireland, while he was in Canada and Scriven could not go to see her. He never intended for the poem to be published but a friend went to see him while he was sick and found a scribbled paper by his sick bed and took interest.
Scriven also died by accidental drowning. He became critically ill in October 1896. Delirious, he rose from his bed, went outdoors where he fell into a small creek. The citizens of Port Hope, Ontario, erected a monument on the Port Hope-Peterborough Highway, as a tribute to this simple and humble man.
