Unbelievable. Remember seeing John Dowie perform on a saturday night pop programme in 77 hosted by Peter Cook as the manage rof a night club. Tried everywhere to get Another Close Shave and then my dad took me to The HMV on Bond St and I got it. Still remember all the lyrics to all the songs.
I used towork opposite the Kings Head in Coruch End in the late 90's where I think John performed a few times.
Dowie is brilliant. I bought 'Another Close Shave' as a pink vinyl import back in '77 and can recite all of 'British Tourist' to this day. Thanks for posting this brilliant bit of comedy.
Brilliant! I had the good fortune to see John perform many times at venues in Birmingham in the 70s and in fact lived opposite to him for a few years. He used to appear @ Big Ears in Moseley and was at the forefront of alternative comedy although sadly is never acknowledged as being so by any of the comedy historians. Even today, those who knew him regularly quote extracts from his sketches. It's time for a John Dowie revival, he could still hold his own against any of the current comedians.
4 pages into Stewart Lee's new book and already I have a new comedy idol. Thanks for uploading this!
