Joan Sutherland sings at the Proms - 13 august 1960

La Stupenda sings "Regnava nel silenzio" from Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. She had sung at the Proms before but this was the first performance she gave there since her triumph at Covent Garden in the role of Lucia.

Quite simply, Joan Sutherland makes any of today's so called coloratura sopranos sound like complete incompetents - there is absolutely NO CONTEST.

@domi2020 Indeed it is. BellaVoce put out a CD of Sutherland recitals from 1956, 1959, & 1960, the last of which includes the music in this video.

She performed (with BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sir Malcolm Sargent!) two Alcina arias (Di, cor mio & Tornami a vagheggiar) and the present Donizetti scene. Excellent stuff, but as she recorded all of it numerous times, not particularly rare.
