Hey. To get less notes, create a midi effect rack before your sound source and fill it with say 6 chains. Made each chain's zone just 1 note, and spread them evenly over the 127 keyspan, say every 21 notes. Then use a pitch device on each chain to repitch each note back to a usable scale. I repitched to standard guitar tuning EADGBE.

to the dude that asked what software i was using, sorry man i hit 'remove' instead of 'reply'. doh. anyway i used midipipe to convert the xy pad's cc data into note-on data, fed into a custom midi effects rack in ableton live.
