  • @grabit1 I don't know if he was better in the Searchers...But Red River is similar to the Searchers insofar as in both movies Wayne plays a flawed hero. Wayne using his superior acting ability was able to play a sympathetic asshole--a man who was hard and inflexable, yet who you could see was more than what was on the surface. In this movie, the Searchers,Hondo,She Wore a Yellow Ribbon,Rio Grande, the Shootist ,to name a few ,Wayne demonstrated what a talented actor he really was..

  • @realfunny7

Well, I don't agree with that personally. Just my opinion. But he had already started to show that he was way more than he had ever been given credit for before. This was the icing that lead to even greater cakes later.

  • @kingcaesar5 I couldn't agree with you more, friend; true, there're no traditional 'bad guys', but, Duke's character, Dunson, had definitely turned that corner..

  • the way wayne say's I'm gonna hang you is probably one of the best line readings of all time, it's the definitive turning point that his character has gone bat shit.

  • I don't understand why Wayne didn't receive any awards for these movies... WAY better than ROOSTER COGBURN... ugh

  • to me he was better in this than in THE SEARCHERS"

  • If only he wasn't dead

  • i love Montgomery Cliff ....sigh if only he was younger ;)

  • I love how John Wayne plays this part. In truth, he comes off as not really being an asshole. He doesn't act the way he does and treat his men the way he does because he's a jerk, he does it because everything he's got is riding on this cattle drive. He doesn't want to go to Abilene because he knows for certain there's a railway in Missouri. He can't let those men run off because others will get the idea they can do the same thing if it gets too tough.

  • This is an excellent scene. Especially the subtext. I don't think a lot of people realize what Matt is actually doing. He's an orphan...everything he has or will have is because of Dunson...in saying those two words, "I will." He is throwing away his entire future.
