After an exhaustive two week sabbatical in Japan in the mid-eighties, Vinukurov returned with his creative juices firing to produce this ode to the ancient Orient.
Subtle and deeply reverential of the culture that had so touched him, the elaborate costuming and intricate choreography say volumes about Martel's preparation for these performances as well as his respect for all art forms. The real strength of this piece, however, is the performance itself. Martel channels a visceral power and presence, and the effect of watching is intense and unnerving.
