We promote common values in our classrooms... why not in our country?
A short film about human rights starring Riz Ahmed and Simon Callow.
*FULL TRANSCRIPT*
Children shouting, noisy rabble....
Riz
Ahmed: Guys, just one minute, shhh shhh
More rabble...
Simon
Callow: All right, all right, that's it.
So, we're going to have to have a little talk about how we can all get on together. What are our values, eh?
RA: Yeh, great idea. Come on, anyone?
Child 1: We should...
SC: Let him speak
Child 1: ...Respect people's personal space
RA: Good Alex. Privacy. Right? Because people shouldn't just be able to go through your stuff whenever they want to...
Child 2: You can't be cruel to people, especially not just because they're a bit different to you
RA: Exactly, so that's no cruelty and equal treatment.
Guys it's important to think about how you'd like to be treated by others. Ok?
Child 3: And we shouldn't always be accusing people, and jumping to conclusions without knowing the facts.
RA: Very good, this class is better than that. We're all innocent until proven guilty.
Guys, how would you like it if you were punished for something that you didn't do? Would you like it?
Children: No sir!
SC: Would you?
Children: No sir!
Child 4: Excuse me sir, there's no point talking about all these values if we don't stick to them.
RA: Yes, it's a very good point Emma.
Narrator: If these are the values we expect in our classrooms, why not in our country?
