This is one of those songs that I can't help but cranking when it comes on the radio. I have very fond memories of being 13 years old and rocking out to this. It was released in 1984 and would eventually earn guitarist Steve Lynch the honor of Guitar Player Magazine's guitar solo of the year in 1985. Steve was well known as an early pioneer of rock finger tapping techniques, including the "eight finger" technique (Jeff Watson of Night Ranger was another rocker flaunting eight finger tapping at the time). In this solo, he doesn't use all eight fingers when tapping, and instead it relies on two fingers from each hand - not too difficult (I thought the harder part was the descending string-skipping part from ~3:27-3:30). The main challenge here with the tapping (as with any lead playing) is to do it cleanly without unwanted string noise. When tapping this solo, you want to use your right hand palm to mute the lower/heavier strings. Do a search for "Steve Lynch tapping lesson" and you'll find some of his impressive skills on display.

I used a great backing track I found that has no guitar. I added two rhythm guitar tracks - one playing the standard guitar part in the verses (the part that just chugs along on the G note mostly), and the other has me playing along to the keyboard chords. For the main guitar solo, I doubled it - one track using my bridge pickup (right speaker), and the other using my neck pickup (left speaker). I like the smoothness that approach gives on the finger tapping part. The intro solo was obviously just improvised :)

  • hi, fantastic playing! Where did you find that backing track?

  • @ak47dragunov Thanks! I don't remember exactly where I got it, but usually I find my backing tracks at guitarbackingtrack . com.

  • this song is so amazing you have to do what it says......Great Cover man one of the best..... by the way what guitar is that?

  • @danielphilpot ..thanks man, the guitar is an early 90s Yamaha RGZ that I have thrashed pretty good :)

  • cool song i see the jsx cabs do you play the jsx heads ? i have one and i can get any tone from aerosmith to zz top van halen ect i use a boss dd3 a phase 90 it sounds better than any marshall that ive used in the past !!!! i used to hate peavey in the 80es but love that jsx now .

  • @Lewiswayne0930 ... yes I use a Peavey JSX head. I agree - Peavey in the 80s seemed to be mainly known for solid state practice amps. They were definitely work horses though - you could bang the hell out of them LOL. But the distortion was so brittle. I had a little Peavey bandit for many years. I remember things changing toward the very end of the 80s with the Rockmaster tube preamp (I loved it and used it in a thrash band), but then when the 5150 came out it was like "whoa, Peavey steps up!"
