It's not really classic hip hop that the song is a satire of. It is more of the gangster rap that was going around from the late 80's to then. Trent has mentioned in a few different videos that he enjoys hip hop music, ie: tribe called quest, saul williams.

and exactlly as you said, the topics of gangster rap is obviously played with in this song. The fact that people were making music so that they looked tough, is a complete joke.
