Michael B. Oren is the Israeli ambassador to the United States. Previously, he was a senior fellow at the Shalem Center, a Jerusalem-based research facility, where he specialized in the diplomatic and military history of the Middle East. He has written extensively for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The New Republic, of which he is a contributing editor. His latest book is Power, Faith, and Fantasy: American in the Middle East 1776 to the Present.

Actually you can 'give' a nation a military. Conquer a country, build a fighting force out of its citizens based on your ideals or ideals you find useful. Use it to contain and suppress the enemy and the undermine and destroy the ideals they live and fight by. And Israel is not an atheistic state. It is a secular state for Jews and people of Jewish origin.

No true Muslim can ever recognize the right of Jews to exist as a nation. Peace is merely a strategic move in their world, while they re-group, both their military as well as civil institutions to Islamize this eye sore which is a Jewish state. Here is my suggestion. Give Palestinians an militantly atheistic state, along the lines of Turkey. One with a highly secular military, a military with a pro-Israeli bias.
