ikr this is the expert way to be tagut algebra
I think that on the board it looks more difficult than it really is. We have been taught a different way at school, personally I found easier than what was shown. I just took the question,
12a-6=5a+8
Then you take the 'A' over to the left, so the signs are on the same side. Then put the numbers on the right so you have,
12a-5a=8+6
Then its, 7a=14 so just dividing 7 into 14 meaning a=2. Im doing my gcse next year and wonder which way is best to work it out because of the test time given?

The way you suggest doing it is fine if you are comfortable doind it that way. Its just that way can lead to a lot of mistakes as you may try to do thing out of order. I was tought that way in school too but found the way i show it on the video makes more sense and means i can tackle more difficult problems easier.

why dont we just take away 7 to leave the A alone????

I'm guessing your talking about the 2nd equations. 7a means 7 times a (seven lots of a) so you can't just take 7 away to leave a alone. For example if a was 5 then 7 times 5 = 35 if you then take away 7 that'll leave 28 which is not a (which we said was 5). However if we do 7 times 5=35 than divide 35 by 7 we get 5 which is a.
Hope that makes sense, all this is covered on earlier lessons on the DVD.
Thanks
