@jsm99 I don't know if he did or not, but I know that when an engine surges, or hunts, it's because of a fault in the fuel system. Usually it means that when the engine is running at "normal speed" the mixture is too lean, and the engine stalls - the governor compensates for this and opens the butterfly which increases airflow and fuel gets through, so the engine speeds up - the governor comes in again and slows the engine and it begins to stall and the"cycle" repeats, hope that helps :]

Did you ever find out the solution to the surging problem on the MTD OHV 179cc? My mom has a snow blower with the same engine which has the same problem. Its a huge bummer because this is only the second season. Hopefully I can get it fixed!

I have gotten my machine back from Sears. They said it was a carburetor problem. I tested the machine and now it runs good. Check the carburetor and the governor. Either might be the culprit.

I have a Sears 88780 single stage snowblower with the same engine and it also surges. I did contact Sears and they told me to bring the machine in for servicing under warranty. In the meantime, I have brought the machine in for servicing. They'll hopefully take care of the problem and they'll be looking over the rest of the machine. I'll report back once I get my machine back from Sears service.

i had a Troy built snow blower with this motor. did the same crap. i returned it and got a MTD which looks exactly like the troy built i just returned, If this piece of shit doesent run im complaining to the company. YOUR NOT THE ONLY ONE man, i have the same issue!!!
