Well now Sanremo had lost its original meaning,

now singers are judged not for the quality

of their songs or theirs own but just basing on

what's their political credo. That's sad.

Italy (I think it was RAI to be precise) was invited but declined due to lack of interest. Why would you want to join? You have the festival della canzone italiana di Sanremo (which ESC is modelled on); in my opinion the greatest music festival in Europe.
