We ride the train from La Pas Alto to the lakeside port of Guaqui in Bolivia on the edge of Lake Titicaca. Here we meet the twice weekly train ferry from Puno carrying grain. The journey is across barren and sparely populated land up on the Altiplano.

At 12,600 feet above sea level, the inlet of Lake Titicaca is magnificent with wildlife and reed beds.
Sadly, the ferry from Puno no longer operates as traffic is sent by road directly to La Paz, so this line is now without a service.

Part of a longer trip in Chile and Bolivia organised by Ffestiniog Travel in November 1997.

  • Train started operations between El ALTO-GUAQUI april of 2008, now it has turistic purposes, anyway I had the great oportunity of being one of the first passengers along with some friends. Hope I'll have the time to upload some videos, great footage by the way!.

  • Many thanks for the info. I thought the line might close after the train ferry ceased. I look forward to seeing the video.
