Josh Gracin's beautiful song about the children soldiers leave behind. Photos found through Google Images, plus several of my brother-in-law with his wife and son. *I do not own any rights to this song. This is strictly a fan-made video to honor Gracin and his song.* Lyrics below:

He used to play in daddy's uniform
With the stripes across the sleeve
And he knew when he was all grown up
What he was gonna be
He used to like to ambush every careless cat or dog
That had the nerve to cross the battle lines that he had drawn

And even though he didn't know
What his dad was fighting for
He was proud to be the other little soldier
In this war

The phone rang in the middle of the night
When they called his dad to go
Kissed him and his mom goodbye
And said God I love you both
Now I know that it's a lot to ask of such a little man
But hold the fort and
I'll be home as quickly as I can

And even though he didn't know
What his dad was fighting for
He was proud to be the other little soldier
In this war

A wall cannot begin to hold
The names of all the kids
Who gave the greatest sacrifice
That any child could give

It was the first time he had ever seen
A flag from up that close
And he watched them as
They folded it so careful and so slow
As they gave it to his mother
He knew what he should do
He raised his little hand and
Gave his dad one last salute

And even though he didn't know
What his dad was fighting for
He was proud to be the other little soldier
He was proud to be the other little soldier
In this war

  • Three times in a row I watched this video and all three times my face was soaked in tears. Instead of thinking about what we gain from wars, we should think about what we lose. Even though I didn't lose anyone to a war, it breaks my heart to think about the ones that did.

  • @sexymaddieNval Just means that God has better plans for you, hon. Don't lose heart!

  • Hello, My name is Michael Ngo, I wish to Join the Army. People have told me to join the Marines Not the Army because the Army "Sucks" But I don't care. The only thing I Care about is serving My country.

  • I am a veteran of OIF OEF this song kills me everytime i hear it. Listening to it i remember during desert shield/ storm my father got the call to go and i remember seeing his equipment packed by the front door for about two weeks, being a reservist, he didn't the call to go right away but the "pack your crap and get ready!" My father at almost 70 years old is still alive today.... but i know a few of my friends who only have a flag as a reminder of their dad!
