In ballet, the degage step is a modified tendu, where the dancer brushes her foot along the ground, lifts it slightly, and slides it back into position. Practice a controlled degage with help from a ballet instructor in this free video on classical ballet training.

    In Ballet it actually means to Disengage or Depart ...it is a brushing motion made with the foot which is why she said that in the video. (to clear could also be one of the definitions though they all make since and relate to the movement)

  • i just started classes and im not getting the terminology AT ALL. in class what ur saying is a degage we call a passe? so whats what??? i am sooo confused!

  • @jellybeans917 I don't think they're telling you that you need a barre. She could be referring to anything, a railing or balustrade, hahah. It doesn't even look like SHE'S using a barre; I've never seen one like that, though so I may be wrong.

    She never did specify that you need to do it in a ballet studio; just an open space. (:
