Forcing 'development' or 'progress' on tribal people does not make them happier or healthier. In fact, the effects are disastrous. The most important factor by far for tribal peoples' well-being is whether their land rights are respected.

  • For the Akuntsu, "modern life" hasn't brought computers and cars. It has brought genocide. Ranchers invading their lands have bulldozed their houses to the ground and tried to extinguish all traces of the Akuntsu. Only six people remain. No outsider speaks their language.

Only when tribal peoples' land rights are respected will they be able to decide for themselves how they wish to live. Until then, outsiders will continue stealing their lands and resources in the name of 'progress'.

  • It is unfortunate. but nobody is stopping people from starting their own tribes. Fact being that tribal people live a harder life. people don't want to go back to doing that.

You can try to postpone the end of tribal civilization but eventually it's gonna end completely. No amount of awareness or support is gonna stop that :(

  • drealgrin, people have been saying that for 500 years. In fact, tribal people who have their land are often healthier and in a better state than those around them.

Their problems don't stem from "living a harder life", but are often a direct result of outsiders wanting the resources on, or under, their lands. Awareness and support can, and has, stopped that.

Google 'progress can kill' for Survival's report on this. It's full of hard facts, and fascinating stories, backing all this up.

  • Babylon is falling as we speak. Progress in the wrong direction is fatal, humans need to wake up and realize that the western way of civilization is not only harmful for our own health but the planet earth also.

  • @pandanus1 Interesting comparison, however Babylon was one state that failed not in technology and progress but in logistics and inefficiency. Also while Western Civilization may have aggravated or accelerated tribal decline, imperialism and slavery were no new topics at the time of the Imperial age. It simply became a global affair. Also Western civilization is no longer blamable for much of the worlds health issues. I cite China, Mongolia, India as 3 major polluters, while the West goes green.

  • @survivalintl Often times they are reliant on outside intervention to receive medical and general supplies, with out which they would perish. As the number of people on earth expands the room for tribes to hold their lands is limited and the human race simply can't survive in the tribal model. Its a form of government that long ago lost its place in society, much as monarchical governments are dying out. We can remember the history of the people but their way of life must change.

  • @survivalintl Tribal life is not as easy as you might imagine and is ultimately a failed or inefficient way of life. It fosters conflict (citing Africa), and when in contact with modern civilization erodes naturally over time. You state that for 500 years people have been in correcting in viewing tribal life as unhealthy and worse off. I disagree and counter with examples of the Navajo in the US and the tribes in Africa. Both suffer from shortages and have much shorter life expectancy.

  • they look just like koi-sans

  • That progress talk is BS, their main motive is to divide destroy and conquer. I love how these people look like the koi-san people of africa. but because of dna testing are probably labeled as asians or even europeans. I for one believe that all nations derived from either the bantu or the koi-san people of africa and thru mixing ,albinism environmental adaptations and food choices developed into many nations.I I also think that dna testing doesn't prove anything.

  • 1 idiot.

  • @5tonyvvvv thats right my friend..respect

  • @pandanus1 Yes very true, everything we do now to the earth is harmful from the food we eat today and how we live,it's a processed throw away society, we should revert back to the ways of nature ,and bring the worlds population down. Gluten and dairy is poison!.support the HEMP movement!.. the timber and cattle and tobacco and oil industries are killing this planet!!!

  • you need to help them get their orders recognized, that way people could configure laws to accomodate more of their concerns. We live in one world as the Black Eyed Peas said.

  • Babylon I agree with what you want to say. but what is "the modern way of life" and what not, who can define that? I agree 100% that we shouldn't take the lands that belong to the tribes but I still want to go on with my life, even if it's an industralized one. doing studies, get enough money to found a family maybe. people might fall to greed and forget their heritage but not everyone is like that :/ it's up to you to be strong enough to persue a career while still holding up your roots
