  • cool but i dont understand. Why do you use hinges? because they tend to lower the value of a stamp.

  • Hinges cost much less than stamp mounts and they do not diminish the value on a used stamp or a previously hinged mint stamp. For mint never-hinged stamps, the collector should compare the cost of the stamp to the cost of the stamp mount (approx 10¢ per mount). For more expensive mint and used stamps we recommend stamp mounts because they protect the stamp better.

  • Hinge use damages the stamp!!! Dont ever hinge your stamps or you'll regret it later when no one buy your stamps on ebay hahaha!!!

  • Nice!

  • you should not as in this video use your fingertip to press stamps into a album .you can put secretions off the skin onto the surface of the stamp.put tissue over the stamp first

  • What's your favorite stamp?

  • @karnubawax

Are they possible "re-gums"? These have a real tendency to curl. Old gum, unless very improperly stored, doesn;t tend towards curling, whereas "re-gums" usually always curl (and just the right humidity and pressure can sometimes "flaltten" them.

Difficult to say if the gum should be removed, as it would depend on the stamp. If they have a low catalog value, not much of of a deal. If they have a very high catalog value, seek out a nearby and reputable stamp dealer.

  • @trasmus6: Unfolding the stamps to dry!!! DUH (slaps forehead)!!! That is EXCELLENT advice!!!

  • Here's a further complication to add to the MNH debate:

I have a bunch of old Hungary and hyper-inflation Germany stamps that are curled because of the old gum. Tried flattening them: big mistake! The gum cracked and now there are creases in them which won't come out (and no I haven't tried ironing them). Sadly, I have a Baby Zep that is showing the same problem. I see no way around this other than to wash the glue off. Any suggestions?

  • @mapearce1 - Yes, very true! EBay is great for the casual to intermediate collector but is definitely NOT the way to go to dispose of a large collection or high value material! That's why poor shmoes like me do EBay!

  • @trasmus6

To the 5% who sell on E-bay??? Who cares?

The last three stamps I sold were sold at Sothebys, and I did very well. There are somewhat better venues to disperse a fine collection through than e-bay, IMHO!

  • @trasmus6

And that is what I am saying,....and the bulk of my collection is pre-1950,...and for that matter is pre-1900. And they are all MNH. At this level its all about original gum and inclusions and fingerprints. And yes, I keep them in hingless albums, which are a minor expense to a serious collector. And, no,....you will never see my collection on E-bay,...I can easily find private buyers/dealers. But you do indeed speak with a great deal of knowledge.
