@TheSamuelMartin Funny that you asked because I purchased the 35mm ƒ1.8 about a month ago for my D3100! You can't go wrong with either, but I'd pick the 35mm over the 50mm because it's a much wider angle lens, perfect for low light photography, and it's a steal for it's price. I'm loving mine!

It's basically the blurriness of the background, but it's more than that.
I highly recommend you to Google search > Bokeh
