Mindstorms runs on direct current, so I'm pretty sure the motor itself wouldn't be damaged, but the electronics could be damaged by polarity change.

@skylorz Mindstorms motors can't get broken because they aré designed for that (also think that kids use this kit)

guys the motors have rotation counters inside them
THEY ARE DESIGNED TO BE MANUALLY TURNED
THERE IS A BUILT IN PROGRAM IN THE NXT BRICK THAT FORCES YOU TO TURN A MOTOR LIKE IN THE VIDEO

@TheMadspy300 : Sure, we've been doing it for years. Just be smooth with your cranking so that you don't stress the gears inside the motors. Electrically there is no problem at all.

Hi folks, If you are reasonably gentle, there is no damage to the motor. The gears inside the motor can take some manual turning (just like the motor turns them), and the electricity generated is safely dissipated as motion energy in the rover and/or a small amount of heat (not enough to fry anything). Just crank smoothly to avoid sudden forces on the motor's gears.
