Rock Music Rock Art follows a group of Ugandan and British musicians and artists as they make the perilous journey to a remote island on Lake Victoria to rediscover and re-awaken forgotten ancient rock gongs - some of the earliest instruments played by our ancestors. The documentary, commissioned by the Ruwenzori Sculptor Foundation, questions whether the artistic and cultural collaboration that develops on the island can produce a new musical form from traditional African and Western contemporary classical music.
Surrounded by the outstanding lanscape and the bittersweet contrast with the poverty of the islands inhabitants, the artists are energised by the rock gongs themselves to create an inspirational cross-cultural fusion of two very different musical styles.
Using the stunning HD footage shot by Distant Object Productions, the BBC covers the adventurous journey and collaboration on Lolui island in addition to in the current trip to the UK of the Ugandan musicians, their reunion with the British artists and the culmination of the project at the opening celebrations of Kings Place in London.
