the song is about her asking to get high with him. she disguises her request by calling it "lighting a Candle" and carrying a candle around on stage. she purposely drops her stash to stay with him and he finds it and hides it from her calling it "a candy bar wrapper". he convinces her to hang with him with out drugs and this works for a few days. (see end of song: "happy new year")

the final performance on Broadway was filmed and released on DVD, its a great watch, better than the movie.

@Tysilee The song is about her wanting to meet him and coming up with an excuse to be around him. She blows out the candle to make him relight it and spend more time with him. Honestly, I'm not sure where nowhereman came up with what he did. As far as I can tell from the movie and stage show, Mimi didn't know Roger used previously and just saw him and was interested in him in general which is why she went to the apt and asked for a light.
