Nelene Hot Number ch. 86

**Nick's POV**
I swallowed the question three times before I gave up and asked Selena, "Why aren't you eating?"

With a visible start, she looked up at me, her eyes storm dark. "I can't stop thinking about Birdie. She as really looking forward to this Mexican buffet."

"And the magic show," Tanya added glumly. She pointed her fork in the direction of the bar, where Bart sat on a stool nursing a drink. From our position in the center of the dining room, we could see into the dim bar through the wide, arched doorway. "Poor Bart. He's lost without her, isn't he?"

Selena's lovely eyes suddenly gleamed with unshed tears. I resisted the urge to scoot my chair and offer her a comforting arm. Hell, I wanted to pull her onto my lap and shield her from the entire world. I settled for pressing my foot against her beneath the table. At the contact, she shot me an enigmatic look but didn't shy away from my comforting touch.

"I'll bet Birdie and Bart regret taking this particular cruise," Tanya continued, pushing her food around on her plate with the same motion as Selena. "I just hope Birdie's okay. I hate to think of her being manhandled by some swarthy, bearded fellow with rotting teeth and an ugly scar across his cheek."

Deckland sighed and pushed his plate aside. "There's a good chance the kidnapper won't harm a gray hair on her head."

Tanya shot him a suspicious glance. "Are you just saying that to ease our minds?"

"No. My comment is based on statistics."

I silently applauded Deckland. Maybe the doctor wasn't such a bad guy after all, I mused, staring at Selena to see if Deckland's professional assurance had eased the worried look in her eyes.

It hadn't.


I frowned, wishing I had my hands wrapped around the kidnapper's neck. I'd take great pleasure in twisting the life out of him. When the meal finished, we moved to a table in the bar and continued our vigil. Deckland joined Bart at the bar to check on the older man's state of mind. The band began to play a slow, sultry tune, giving me an idea.

I rose and grabbed Selena's hand. Her eyes widened when she realized my intent.

"No, Nick. I couldn't."

"You can, and you will." I tugged on her hand again, and she reluctantly came to her feet. Pulling her soft body firmly against mine, I moved with her to the tiny dance floor. Several other couples joined us.

With my mouth close to her ear, I whispered, "If Birdie was here, she'd be stomping her feet and cheering us on, and you know it."

"And making crude comments about your composition."

Sighing, she relaxed against me, laying her head on my shoulder. I could feel the warmth of her body seep into me as we swayed to the sultry beat of "Black Velvet." For once, I ignored my instant arousal. It wasn't something I could control anyway.

"Selena-"

"Nick-"

She lifted her head and looked at me. Time seemed to stand still as we gazed into each other's eyed and swayed together. Slowly, I touched my mouth to hers in a kiss that was sweet but brief. I had to swallow several times to get rid of the suspicious lump in my throat. "You first."

"I was just going to say thank you."

I lifted an inquiring brow.

She blushed and ducked her head. "For helping Bart. That was a lot of money to just give away."

hey guys. so i have no excuse for not posting in forever. i just haven't been feeling this story and i don't know how many of you guys actually like this story. but i'm trying, i really am
