Jordan - Hejaz Railway

The Hejaz railway, which transported pilgrims from Damascus to Medina, was one of the great train journeys of the world. Now, an ambitious plan is underway to restore it.

At the Qadem station on the outskirts of Damascus, tourists inspect rusty old steam trains. Nearly a hundred years ago, these trains were used on the Hejaz line. Now, they could again be used again. "The Hejaz railway was once a joint project of the entire Islamic world", explains archaeologist Ulrich Bellwald. "Maybe it will bring people together again." Restorers hope to rebuild sections of the line destroyed by Lawrence of Arabia, update the infrastructure and renovate station buildings. But hampering reconstruction efforts are hoards of treasure hunters, digging for rumoured gold under the tracks.

The Hejaz Railway was built with donations from Moslems to enable these to make their pilgrimage to Mecca....I have some of the vary stamps used by the Ottomanes to accept donations...it will be very sad if the Saudis do not accept the railway for its intended use.

If the line was rebuilt, it would be a great tribute to Ottoman accomplishments in the Arabian peninsula (although I have a feeling T.E. Lawrence might not be too happy)...

I really hope they build it. Seeing such a historical line in disrepair is saddening. If it is rebuilt I am almost sure that it will bring more tourists, and move money to the cities. Which I would hope encourage other nations to start rebuilding their old lines.
