i have a viper 125mw and have noticed that when i switch it on there is a loss of power and you can see the beam spliting in two. but once i warm it up in my hand for a minuite its fine. is this because the laser is being stored in a too cool a place?

Yes. All DPSS lasers like the viper are sensitive to temperature and don't work properly when cold.

The cold will not damage the laser, just give the effect you described till the laser warms up.
