In Australia, cigarette packets no longer contain tar, nicotine or carbon monoxide level warnings, just gory pictures and statistics, plus a "Quitline" phone number covering most of the packet.

While the left tries to restore this information, the right is filibustering by trying to ban bongs. Nobody cares (much) about bongs except those who sell them, but the left won't ban them in order to allow the cigarette laws through.

They can have it both ways, but they refuse to agree.

It's only a 'choice' before the nicotine cravings hit, and fewer are making the decision to start.

I have also lost family to tobacco-related illness, in some cases up to 30 years after they quit (the damage was already done). However, it is not practical to make cigarettes illegal at this juncture, all we can do is educate people and regulate sale.

If tobacco were discovered tomorrow, there is no doubt it would be banned; its use was already widespread centuries before the risks were known.
